recommended vegan restaurants

The Naam is a well-known veggie standard but Vancouver vegans have other options as well.

For vegans in the know, Vancouver restaurants offer a wealth of options that both satisfy and delight

Dining out, especially with friends, can be one of the more stressful aspects of being a vegan. First, you have to find a place that caters to your meat-free, dairy-free diet; then, you have to convince your meat-hungry friends to join you there. For anyone who's tried, it can be a hard sell.

But why should dining out be so difficult? Eating and socializing should be pleasurable, not a hassle.

Luckily for those in Vancouver, eating vegan is not so hard when you know where to go. The city is filled with a variety of restaurants offering vegan and meat dishes on the same menu.

Check out our list below. While these aren't all 100 percent vegan, they all have delicious vegan options on their menus. The ones that are completely vegan are marked with a V. The list is ever-evolving, so we invite you to add comments with your favourite spots!

Slickety Jim's – Speaking of breakfast, Slickety Jim's has one vegan option on its brunch menu and, lawwwd, it is worth the trip! [Update: A fire in 2009 forced this Main St institution to close until a new location could be found and monies raised.]

Habit – Another Main St spot, this place is great for gathering with vegan and non-vegan friends who appreciate well-crafted food, excellent flavouring, local wine and feeling cool. Now with a new menu.

Cafe Kathmandu – For Nepalese food made with the freshest of ingredients and served with a smile, head to this Commercial Dr neighbourhood restaurant.

Sejuiced – Going healthy? Head to West 4th for a fresh fresh salad, some fresh fresh juice and maybe even a fresh fresh smoothie. V

Sweet Cherubim – A great little grocery and food counter on Commercial Dr and THE BEST SAMOSAS IN VANCOUVER! However, it's best to steer clear of the tepid subjis on display...

The samosas at Sweet Cherubim are a must-try!

Jamaican Pizza Jerk – A favourite of my partner's, owner Chef Bounty serves several vegan dishes, including vegan rotis on Thursdays, and carefully selects only the freshest, non-GM products. His vegan pizzas and Irie bowls are a particular treat; my favourite is the Peter Tosh with vegan ham. Ask about the akee

Nuba – Lebanese food at its most scrumptious! Get the Najib’s Special!

Sha Lin Noodle House – Amazing hand-cut noodles and pan-fried dumplings. The curried-flavoured tofu and cutting noodles are a great vegan option, and the fried eggplant and tomatoes are addictive.

Joey's – I know what you're thinking (Joey's?!), but yes, Joey's allows diners to substitute the meat in several of its dishes with fake chicken; the ginger "beef" is particularly popular. A terrific option when dining out with a group of non-veg-heads!

Annapurna – Reader suggested, and for good reason. Head to this West 4th vegetarian Indian restaurant for consistently delicious food.

Bodhi Choi Heung Vegetarian Restaurant – With a name that means "delicious enlightened food," this Fraser St spot is one of the few Chinese Buddhist veggie restaurants in Vancouver, offering 132 vegan options.

Hon's Wun Tun House – Hong Kong diner food with a dedicated vegetarian option, offering a good selection of fake meat dishes. Locations include Robson, Chinatown, Richmond, New Westminster and Coquitlam.

Fassil Ethiopian Resturant – Ethiopian food is great for groups, especially when some eat meat and others don't. And few do it better in Vancouver than the wonderfully friendly staff at Fassil. Try the vegetarian platter for two or three people.

Bandidas Taqueria – Expect vegetarian and vegan tacos on pillowy-soft, handmade tortillas; fresh ingredients; cold local brew and a good collection of current and nostalgic indie tunes. Plus, they culture their own vegan sour cream! Here, the mandate is pure sustainability—the owners even use a bike trailer for all restaurant transport. A great Commercial Dr hangout.

Grand View Szechuan Restaurant – This lovely little spot on Fraser (near King Ed) delights every time. The ingredients are very fresh and the flavours mouthwatering. Forgo the usual black bean sauce and ask for the authentic Szechuan (pronounced Se-twan) sauce of garlic and chillies. The kind owners make you feel right at home.

3G Vegetarian Restaurant – This restaurant extension of the fake-meat depot Veggie Flavour serves up a mean plate of "chicken" drumsticks. The extensive Chinese vegetarian menu is entirely meat-free but some of the fake meats may contain dairy. The fresh squeezed juices are a great touch. They also do dim sum on the weekends.

Grub – Word on the street is this Main Street favourite uses seasonally fresh ingredients to serve up two vegetarian entrees every day, one of which is always vegan. They even offer a daily vegan dessert!

House of Dosas on Kingsway

Comment by Anonymous, May 11, 2010 at 09:42

House of Dosas on Kingsway and Knight is an excellent 24 hr flavourful veg/vegan alternative to the Nam. It is cash only, but it is delicious. Very authentic vibe, and always cricket on the tv, and always busy.

I'd also recommend Hell Pizza on 1931 Lonsdale. They have an amazing vegan pizza that features refried beans, as well as many unique veggie options with nuts and avocado, gluten free crusts are also available. I often make the drive from downtown to get my pizzas.

Nyala on Main is another great Ethiopian option. They have many veg/vegan options, and the flavours are amazing. I always leave there full, and the owner, Asafa, is maybe one of the nicest guys you'll meet. They occasionally do a vegan buffet on Wednesdays, which is amazing.

I also agree with all the comments here on The Nam. It sucks. Everything from the 80's hippy decor, to the crappy service, to the food. Everything at The Nam tastes like stale cardboard. Way overrated. There are so many better veg options in town.

Afghan Horseman on Granville Island makes a deadly vegan platter!

Karmavore Vegan Shop (although not a restaurant) is also a super hidden gem for vegans! Vegan marshmallows, cheese, clothing, shoes, pet food, everything!

I can't believe no one has mentioned Organic Lives! All their food is all organic, vegan and raw. Their raw desserts and pizzas in particular are simply astounding... delicious and really good for you, too.

They also supply high quality, ethically-sourced vegan ingredients (cacao products, superfoods, etc.) if you (like me) are into raw food and make your own desserts. You can order all their products online or check out their restaurant/production faclity at Quebec and 2nd.

Check these guys out, they are doing great work and deserve more exposure... http://www.organiclives.org/

Comment by Anonymous, October 21, 2009 at 09:50

try the Lemon Duck at Bodhi Choi. And, for Ethiopian, I love the Red Sea Cafe, because 1) the bread is more thin and moist than most, and 2) you can choose your dishes, which means I can get less bean/legume dishes and more vegetables.

It constantly disturbs me

Comment by eljacko, April 27, 2009 at 10:25

It constantly disturbs me that The Naam is ranked so high, and is usually the first mention, amongst veg restaurants. Am I the only vegan with taste buds and a sense of cuisine? The Naam is by far the worst veg restaurant I have ever eaten at. The horrendous service is trumped only by the dumpster-quality food. A good deal of the dishes aren't even made to order; they sit in the steam table all day until somebody orders it, and the bread they serve is crusty due to being thawed from frozen. No restaurant worth its salt would ever consider freezing bread. Fresh bread is easy - frozen is lazy.
Thumbs down for the Naam.

I mostly agree. Some of the food at the Naam is decent, and the service has improved in recent years. But it is certainly not the best veg restaurant in town and should never be at the top of the list.

Comment by Hilary, May 6, 2009 at 11:22

I'd call the Naam more than decent but agree that it's definitely not the best vegetarian/vegan option going. However, it is somewhat of an icon in the Vancouver veg scene and is likely the most popular—I've never not waited in a long lineup to get in—plus, it's the only place on this list that's open 24 hours. —Hilary Henegar, Granville Online editor

I love Bodhi Choi Heung Vegetarian Restaurant (3932 Fraser St, just N of 25th), because they have many lovely tempeh dishes... And the food is less salty than at Bo Kong, and not far away. A Fraser "secret"!

Comment by BCBlue, February 5, 2009 at 14:33

Okay, I've been veggie for over 15yrs now and i have to ask, what is it with veggie restaurants??? Is there a reason why one of the most common themes with all veggie restaurants is terrible service?
Last time I went to Radha, my girlfriend and I stood at the "please wait for seating" sign for ten minutes while two servers chatted behind the bar 15ft. away pretending we weren't there... and while friendly, the service didn't get much better from there.
Anyone have an answer to this?

They also arrange dine-outs at a lot of the restaurants mentioned with set menus for a fixed price. I've been to many of them and they were well worth it for the reason that you get to taste more dishes than you would if you just went to the restaurant with one or two friends alone.

Awesome list.

Most of the Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurants in the city are vegan friendly. And Nyala is the best of them all. They used to have a vegan brunch but I don't think they do anymore now that they've moved to Main St. The owner is really nice and they're very vegan friendly.

An option for a fancy night out is Restaurant Connor Butler. They do a 6-course vegan tasting menu for $65 that's really good. We ate there and with the pre-amuse and the amuse bouche it ended up feeling like 7 courses. The deserts were AMAZING. Connor is wonderfully creative and the dishes are all tailored to the specific occasion. Definitely worth a visit on a special occasion. He also buys mostly local and organic, which is a plus.

A few more suggestions...

Central Bistro on Denman used to have three vegan brunch items on their menu (tofu scramble, tempeh hash and vegan french toast) but their menus aren't posted on their website anymore and I haven't been able to get a response from them either by email or phone about whether they still have them (we were looking for a brunch spot this weekend).

The Templeton on Granville and Seb's on Broadway both also have tofu scrambles for brunch.

JJ Bean has vegan baked goods if you are looking for a coffee place - two kinds of muffins and an intense chocolate cookie.

In addition to having vegan items on the menu regularly, Wild Rice has a three-course vegan option in their Dine-Out menu.
