May 07, 2012 Tech Talk: Technology

B.C. entrepreneurs benefit from links with Silicon Valley expats.

Boosting the number of B.C. tech success stories requires continued focus on innovation and commercialization, and both require capital. However, a pile of money and a clever innovation don’t guarantee success. Effective commercialization requires experienced, networked and focused entrepreneurs, something that B.C. has in scarce quantities. But rather than lament that many of our tech companies are run by first-time entrepreneurs, let’s help them find like-minded technology people who have “been there, done that.”
April 02, 2012 Tech Talk: Angel Investing and Funding

A little liquidity would encourage early-stage investors.

If you’re a tech entrepreneur, a friend or family member of one, or if you’re an angel investor, you know that the investment math is harshest at the risky early stages of a new venture. Companies often don’t get off the ground; some get a few customers and then never get meaningful traction. For taking that risk angel investors may get a large reward at the end, but in the meantime their money could be tied up for a decade or more.

More disconcerting is the fact that those who take the risk early may end up diluted to...

Do local entrepreneurs have what it takes to be insanely great?

Following the death of Steve Jobs last year and the subsequent bestselling biography, the iconic 1997 TV ad for the Think Different campaign served as an apt symbol for the life of one of the greatest American entrepreneurs. Narrated in the dulcet tones of Richard Dreyfuss, the ad gave homage to “the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square hole.” Even if you didn’t read the book, you know that Steve Jobs was one of those crazy ones. He was one of a rare breed of entrepreneur who dares to...
February 06, 2012 Tech Talk: Telecom

The arrival of a South Korean telecom company is key in B.C. becoming a global tech powerhouse.

We have grown many world-class technology businesses in B.C. in the past 40 years, and that has led to more jobs, more tax revenue and a critical mass of talent for the sector. Organic growth of the industry is fantastic, but a quicker way to grow the base is to attract mature companies. Fourteen months ago, I discussed a company called iQmetrix Software Development Corp., and how the founders moved their headquarters to Vancouver in search of senior management and development talent. Regina to Vancouver is an...
January 03, 2012 Tech Talk: Technology

The B.C. tech sector is getting fat in the middle – and that’s a good thing.

It’s a bit tough to make predictions, what with the Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world, but I’m optimistic about the technology sector in 2012. The reason is that our technology industry, reaching middle age, is getting a little fat in the middle. And that’s a good thing.

According to BCStats, in 2010 the technology industry accounted for six per cent of the province’s GDP, creating just under $10 billion of annual output from its 85,000 employees. The vast majority of...
December 05, 2011 Tech Talk: Biotechnology

A long-dead university particle physics project could have created bountiful opportunities for B.C.'s business and science communities.

If you haven’t been paying attention to the world of particle physics this fall and, in particular, the experiment completed recently that left physicists all over the world gob-smacked, then you won’t get this clever joke: “Hey, we don’t allow neutrinos in this bar,” says the bartender. A neutrino walks into a bar.

If you’re giggling, then you probably really like Star Trek too. For most of us, the joke requires a little...
