B.C.'s HST Voted Down
On 26 August 2011, B.C.'s HST was voted down in a referendum, 54.7 per cent to 45.3 per cent.
The result, which has wide consequences for B.C's economy, is a rebuke to the governing BC Liberals, and may trigger a provincial election.
"The people got their say," writes BCBusiness columnist Tony Wanless. "Even if they don't know what they're saying."
The two districts that most strongly supported the HST are, not surprisingly, among B.C.'s wealthiest: West Vancouver-Capilano (64.52% voted to save it) and Vancouver-Quilchena (62.40%). The two that most forcefully opposed the tax are Surrey-Green Timbers (75.51% voted to kill it) and Vancouver-Kingsway (72.45%).
