Video: The Times of Joy and James

The partnership, in life and business, of a genuine B.C. power couple: Joy MacPhail and James Shavick.

The power couple featured in August's cover story, The Other Team, are happily hetero and fiscally straight. So what are they doing in the business of gay TV? The couple, who each brought a established name to the marriage, made a joint one by purchasing and turning around the money-losing OutTV.

How they became a power couple is another story. They met on the set of the New Addams Family in 1999 in Vancouver, when  Shavick was the executive producer of the  series. Joy MacPhail, then B.C.'s finance minister, had chosen the location to announce a new provincial tax credit for filmmakers. The rest, as they say, is BC business history. This BCBusiness slideshow offers a glimpse at the individual lives of Joy MacPhail and James Shavick.
