Founder and managing director, Busby Perkins+Will

When I was very young in my career, I worked for a famous architect in Europe, Sir Norman Foster. He’s the guy who told me, “If you’re going to do something, you’ve got to be the best.” And certainly I adhere to that. I also learned early to heed the general advice that the environment is the future, and unless we solve our environmental issues, it’s not worth doing business. You have to organize your business around a commitment to an environmental future.

I created my own business from scratch, based on an environmental approach to a traditional profession. It allowed me to create a specialty and to develop knowledge that few other people have. I’ve always tried, and I’m still trying, to be the best possible designer, the best possible environmentalist and the best possible leader of a business.
