Ten Neighbourhoods of Style

Jennifer Kostuik

Yaletown Style

Jennifer Kostuik | Owner: Jennifer Kostuik Gallery "I'm wearing a lot of dresses lately. They give me freedom to move – you can't hang art in a suit." (Here: a dress by Mellissa and shoes from Jack and Jill.) "I do most of my shopping in local boutiques, all parts of the world are represented in Yaletown. Diversity is what drew me here."
Mark Virgin

West End Style

Mark Virgin | Principal: Stevens/Virgin  "I wear mostly Italian. I love the cuts, the cloth and the comfort. I have a classic style but I like to add pieces that have edge." (Here, in Etro.) The former chair of The Dr. Peter Center, Mark was an integral force behind it. "Law pays the bills and the Dr. Peter Center feeds my soul. Everyone in BC should be proud of the work it does – it's a special part of the community."
Constantina James

Shaughnessy Style

Constantina James | Owner: Simply Sublime"I'm a new mom and I love yoga pants, but I need to feel sexy. I wore flats all through my pregnancy and now it's all about heels." (Here: jeans by Rich and Skinny, blouse by local designer Wise and Proper, shoes by Dior shoes, jewelry by Simply Sublime.) "I love this neighborhood, I grew up here. When I saw the 'for lease' sign on the building I didn't think twice."
Jon Cartwright

Gastown Style

Jon Cartwright | GM: Westbeach Apparel The new GM for Westbeach, the iconic streetwear company, grew up idolizing the company, became one of their sponsored riders, then crossed over into the business of the brand. (Here: a jacket and board from the upcoming winter collection.) The mountains offer Jon constant inspiration. "It's important for us to be right here," he says. "We're selling Vancouver to the world."
Kim Scarrow

Point Grey Style

Kim Scarrow | Owner: Moksha Yoga Vancouver Chronic arthritis led Kim to Moksha, a form of yoga practiced in a heated room. "I'm from here, so when I came back to Vancouver to open my studio it was a natural choice." says Kim of her Alma Street location. "Yoga clothes offer different style options, but I like a cleaner, more professional look."
Michael Howcroft

Downtown Style

Michael Howcroft | Partner: Blake's "I work downtown and I play downtown," says lawyer Micheal Howcroft. (Here: suit by Prada, shirt and tie by Zegna, shoes by Dior.) "I like the challenge of expressing my  style within the confines of a conservative environment. To me, it's important to dress well: it adds confidence and conveys a sophisticated message."
Sayo Nickerson

Cedar Cottage Style (around Fraser, in the 40s)

Sayo Nickerson | Agent: Remax Real Estate  "I sell a lot of homes in this neighbourhood. I have a real affinity with it. It's down to earth and full of people my age. I keep it simple: I love Jacob, capris, and sweaters. It's my uniform."
Cal Shumiatcher

Main Street Style

Cal Shumiatcher | Partner, Exec. Producer: Paperny Films "I really dress for the neighbouhood. It's an industrial working neighborhood and we're a boutique television studio. This part of town is full of eclectic stand-alone businesses. On one side we have a knife sharpening place that been there forever; on the other, a bakery. It's cool."

Colleen Miller

Crosstown Style (between Gastown & downtown)

Colleen Miller | Owner: Button Button "I replace the buttons on all the clothes I buy and if I'm wearing something without buttons then I'll wear a button necklace or bracelet." (Here: in Obakki and jewelry made from vintage doilies.) "I have one customer who comes in and sorts buttons for hours. At first I was a little apprehensive but he ended up buying them all, so of course I don't mind when he comes in."
Keith Ewert

South Granville Style

Keith Ewert | Principal: Matrix Partners "I love this area. My office is downtown, but I am always here. I shop at Boboli a lot and go to the galleries for openings and to see clients." (Here: in a favorite Armani suit with Revo glasses and St. Laurent shoes.)

We tour Vancouver style, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

Plato said of Athens, "This city is what it is because our citizens are what they are." Vancouver's fashionable citizens are proving that when it comes to personal style, the city is no longer running third to Toronto and Montreal. BCBusiness examined ten distinct neighborhoods and found that, whether they dress for fashion or function, Vancouverites are what make Vancouver incredibly chic.

I'm sorry but your pictures speak otherwise. Vancouver is casual not stylish. Very west coast North American, hoodie and jeans. Nothing wrong with that but just call it what it is.
