"If we can’t work with nice people, then we don’t want to do it,” explains COO Christine Stoneman.

Number of employees: 71
Head office: Victoria
Quote: “Leaders and managers trust employees to make their own decisions; our opinion matters and is always taken into consideration”

If my company were a celebrity, it would be: MICHAEL BUBLÉ
“He’s not a show-off, just a down-to-earth good person who likes to help people”

No, Chemistry Consulting’s name doesn’t refer to lab-coated geeks assessing the compatibility of chlorides and nitrates. It refers to ensuring a personal fit within the workplace, and it starts at home, with internal hiring policies. “The other owners and myself are at the stage where if we can’t work with nice people, then we don’t want to do it,” explains Christine Stoneman, COO and part-owner along with Frank Bourree and Charles Shier.

The “nice” factor obviously extends to management as well as employees. That would explain, for example, why when managers found employees working at home well into the evening and on weekends, they limited access to the company’s online database to weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Little details like that explain why staff report a fierce loyalty to the company, often describing managers as approachable and “real people.”
