This is Olympic Vancouver, through the eyes of Cole and Jakob, two local sharpshooters.
All the feeling of the Olympics in one lady: enthusiasm, the Olympic aesthetic, the impossible-to-find red gloves. Oh, and she’s out for a jog.
Olympic Enthusiasm, Part Deux. We met this wonderful lady in Chinatown. Her advice to us: “Cheer for Canada – or else!"
As we’re write this, the last of the buildings are being dressed and the final touches made to make the city scream with the Olympic vibe.
This is one of the many pavilions around the city – the Aboriginal Pavilion. We were licking our lips thinking about the delicious food that will be prepared inside throughout the Games.
Ta-da! Canada Pavilion. For the Turin Games, the B.C.-Canada Pavilion was a log home handmade by builders from 100 Mile House. For our Games, it’s a white tent.
On Granville Street, we were looking for toques and parkas. Instead we found shimmering heat and tourists in tank tops.
This lady giving the interview works for a foreign TV station – a common sight around Vancouver these days. She spoke both fluent English and a language we couldn’t understand, although it sounded pretty wild.
Athletes' Village in all its splendor. That massive Kangaroo flag was put there by some of the Australian athletes – yes, Australians at the Winter Games! – and sparked a trend of flag-dangling among the other athletes staying at the village.
These signs are everywhere you look downtown these days and few languages are left out of the mix. (Actually, we looked for a Swedish one but couldn’t find it.)
When big globes collide. The last giant ball, built for Expo 86, and has met its match in a smaller globe recently erected along the Seawall.
Don’t even look at someone wrong these days if you’re cruising around downtown Vancouver. Chances are, a camera caught you doing it.
BC Place is the center of the madness right now; the buzz is building as the opening ceremonies near. On this day, we could hear the rehearsal music playing inside the stadium. If Vancouver’s ceremonies come even close to Beijing’s, we’ll be thrilled.
Many entertainment venues are preparing for a busy month, and the Commodore is one. This sign, written in a language that looks cool and probably sounds even cooler, is right in front of the historic nightspot.
There is no shortage of help in the city right now. These people in blue are all over the city – a great asset to the tourists flooding the downtown core. Also, check out the new “T” signs at the transit stations – flashy stuff.
