“The leaders of the company are honest, hardworking people, looking to expand and grow the company in a good way – not looking for a get-rich-quick easy way out”

Respect is the watchword at Kryton, a manufacturer of concrete waterproofing products. In filling out the Best Companies survey, many employees commented that everyone is treated equally, with one employee noting “there are no walls between the different departments.” And respect is a two-way street, with management setting the example: “The top executives walk their talk,” wrote one employee. But it’s not all buttoned-down business: a chief fun officer makes sure to pry staff away from their desks for regular events and outings, such as a mini Olympics and a whitewater rafting outing last summer.

It is extremely disappointing to see the number of companies like this one who end up making the TOP BC LIST OF COMPANIES TO WORK FOR. Too many of these firms have such an horrendous reputation for disrespecting intelligent, loyal, efficient and cooperative employees. It is discouraging for educated, experienced individuals seeking employment, since you cannot rely on these surveys. One must investigate and do private research through contacting former and present employees, to find out what the "REAL Corporate Culture" is, by that I mean how people are treated on a daily basis by Management and what undue stress is placed upon them. Having worked on three continents I find the City of Vancouver has the worst reputation by CEO's and Executive Management for exploiting employees, who start enthusiastically and put their very best skills to work to make these companies successful. It is indeed disappointing and discouraging that this kind of low level Management style is so PREVALENT in Vancouver. Anonymous client & supplier

Kryton had a 100% completion

Kryton had a 100% completion rate through total intimidation by its CEO and Chairman. Its satisfaction rate was the result of senior management watching over employee's shoulders while they completed the survey. Kryton's human resource practices are in total violation of the BC Employment Standards Act and it is by sheer luck that yothey have not yet been called on these infractions. At Kryton, as an employee, you're either in the 'in'crowd and learn quickly to keep your intelligence under wraps by keeping your mouth shut or risk being fired. There is no succession planning; you must be a direct descendent of the chairman to achieve a level of authority in the company. The top two officials, CEO and VP are brother and sister and are the only children of the chair.

How this company got to be selected as one of BC's top whatever employers begs the question "What does a company have to do to qualify???"

Signed 'anonymous former employee'.

We appreciate your feedback. Employee retention and succession planning are important to Kryton’s management. We have worked hard over the past two years to decrease our turnover rate by more than half. We hire the industry's best and brightest and train them to be successful.

We are proud of our progress and so are our employees. The BC Business Best Companies survey was completed by 100% of Kryton’s staff and we had an overall employee satisfaction rating of 4.39 out of 5. We are honoured our employees helped to make us one of the top employers in the province and look forward to continuing to maintain a positive working environment.

I am wondering if your anlaysis looks at turnover rate? Kryton has a knack for pushing out talented people. The management team is intimidated by staff who is smarter than they are. It is really difficult to have any independent thought in a company like Kryton.
They do have a social commitee, which helps the fun factor, but it is only a minor perk.
