August Fashion: Linens and Things

Capture that holiday feeling at the office with breezy linen duds.

We in B.C. may not enjoy mandated two-week vacations every summer like the Europeans, but with a little effort
a casual Friday at the office can almost approximate a day off. At least sartorially. The loose, blowzy cut of most linen clothing suggests a breezy summer feeling, while its propensity to wrinkle can teach even the most assiduous micro-manager that not everything in life can be controlled.

Solid linen women's shirt in tangerine, $128; linen men's shirt, $118; and Jacobean floral linen women's shirt, $148, all from Tommy Bahama, tommybahama.com

sunglasses in vancouver

What would Vancouverites do without their sunglasses?

Sunglasses are the ultimate summer accessory in Vancouver.

The ultimate summer accessory, sunglasses can be worn with everything from Brooks Brothers to bikinis while
providing practical protection from ultraviolet rays. More importantly, their ability to broadcast an instant cool factor will transform stolen sidewalk lunches into mini beach vacations – if you let them work their magic. When on the hunt, remember the continued dominance of retro-chic means bigger is irrefutably better (within reason). Here, a
selection of this summer’s most stylish looks.

The female of the species loves flowers. And so, by a Herculean leap of male logic, flowers and floral patterns have traditionally been reserved for the fairer sex. Or at least they were until recently, when more enlightened ideas of masculinity began to bud. As the flowers promised by last month’s showers start to bloom, the dapper gentleman takes this opportunity to mirror nature’s rebirth in his everyday wardrobe using bright, cheerful – but masculine – floral accents. Meanwhile, women, who already enjoy the sartorial variety of an English garden, can turn to more fashion-forward accessory choices: adding whimsical jewelry for a playful take on the season.

Although welcome after a solid stretch of wet winter days, the West Coast’s schizophrenic springs range from gloriously sunny to shockingly snowy, sometimes in the same day. A workaday trench can easily handle the season’s mercurial nature but doesn’t always convert easily to a weekend scenario. Whether with a high-end label or a high-trend staple, up your style during your downtime with a light, stylish shell jacket that can see you to a late brunch, a leisurely walk along the ocean or a stop in at your local farmer’s market.

Giving the iconic Cowichan sweater its due respect.

The Cowichan sweater has a time-honoured place in the pantheon of Canadian style somewhere between the fringed belt of Quebec’s Carnival and the Roots Olympic bucket hat.

So it should have come as no surprise that the Bay’s Team Canada Olympic sweater sparked some controversy when it was unveiled last October. Although hand-knit, the Olympic sweater does not use traditional wools or traditional colours, nor is it knitted by Cowichan First Nations people.

Holiday looks
Sartorially speaking, the holiday season is a time of marked contrast: reindeer sweaters playing a seasonal counterpoint to the finery and glamour of evening wear.

While a jingling elf cap may keep the accounting department in stitches at the office Christmas party, the sharp, ambitious dresser knows to steer clear of theme outfits in favour of a more classic – and classy – look. Herewith, a selection of accessories that will bring holiday cheer to even the most workaday ensemble.

Business style: the wristwatch

The advent of the cellphone and BlackBerry may have rendered obsolete the functionality of the wristwatch, but its pull as a powerful status symbol has not diminished in the least.

The advent of the cellphone and BlackBerry may have rendered obsolete the functionality of the wristwatch, but its pull as a powerful status symbol has not diminished in the least. Along with the wedding ring, the wristwatch is today the only universally acceptable piece of male jewelry – but it wasn’t always so. Less than a century ago, the pocketwatch was king, while “wristlets” (considered a passing fad) were the exclusive province of fashionable women. However, after this new hands-free technology was credited – along with the machine gun – with leading the British to victory in the Boer War, the wristwatch made the leap from battlefield to boardroom, as captains of industry embraced the manly new accessory.

Sneakers
What your kicks say about you.

When ad man Henry Nelson McKinney coined the term “sneaker” for Keds’s rubber-soled  – and therefore noiseless – shoe in 1917, he could hardly have foreseen the humble canvas-top shoe’s eventual, all-pervasive market dominance. Whether you’re running a marathon or just running errands, sneakers are perhaps the most versatile article of clothing ever devised – be they “trainers,” “gym shoes,”  “runners” or just “kicks.”
